CHONPS is the acronym for the six essential elements in living organisms.
Carbon- Carbon is the chemical basis of life. It is really good at bonding. This is because carbon can bond in four places, and it even can bond to itself, so its easy to make lots of different molecules. Without carbon we wouldn't even exsist.
Hydrogen- Hydrogen is the lightest element (only one proton and one electron) and the most abundant element in exsistence. In it's elemental form, hydrogen is a gas. It is readily oxidized and it reacts and binds to lots of other elements. We are made up of mostly water, and water is made of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen without hydrogen you have no water, and without water, life will cease to exsist. Hydrogen, is bound mostly to carbon and nitrogen, but is part of almost ever molecule in your body: DNA, proteins, sugars, fats. In fact, the hydrogen bond which forms between atoms that "share" hydrogen, is one of the most important interactions that makes biological molecules behave as they do.
Oxygen- Oxygen is inhaled into the lungs and neters our blood through the alveoli. The oxygen is carried to the rest of the body through the blood.
Oxygen is used to make water molecules. Water makes up the vast majority of our body tissue. Nearly every function that keeps us alive uses oxygen as the sourse of enery. Oxygen is the prime ingrident for our body's metabolism.
Metabolism: The process that changes food into the fuel (energy) needed to continue living.
Nitrogen- Nitrogen is a chemical element that is ordorless, colorless, and tasteless. it appears in gra ammounts in the atomosphere and considered as a vital element nessassary for various living thing son earth's survival. First of all, nitrogen is present in proteins. Our cells in the body are made up of proteins and without it the cells would lack the capactiy to repair and nourish the tissues in the body.
Phosphorus- it takes certain levels of phosphous to help keep your bones stay healthy. In fact you can drink all the milk that you want and take calcium supplements every day, but unless you're getting enough phosphorus into your system, the calcium will not be able to help you and your bones. it helps the body create energy. It also assists your body in snthesizing proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Finally, it regulares the fluid levels in your body.
Sulfur- Sulfur is needed for the proper production of collagen, the protein found in all connective tissues. This makes it an extremely important component in protecting the joints. Sulfur is also important for maintaining healthy hair and skin.
